TEN

It was a long night. Nicole tossed and turned, attuned to every creak and noise outside her room. She fluffed her pillow, slapping it a couple of times, and tried to get comfortable.

It didn’t work. Her nerves were shot. She was too on edge. Her muscles were bunched up, and her legs felt like she needed to stretch them. After throwing back the covers, she paced the confines of her room for ten minutes, trying to work off the stress. Then she slipped back into her bed and resolutely closed her lids.

It was past four before she dropped off to sleep out of sheer exhaustion.

When her alarm went off at six, she smacked the snooze button twice before she managed to drag herself out of bed. She took her shower and dressed, then went to the kitchen to make herself a cup of coffee and breakfast. She passed through the living room on the way.

Jack was still asleep on the couch. She paused and stared down at him for a moment, tenderness for him stirring inside. She stretched out her hand but pulled it back before she could touch his hair.

She stepped away from him and continued to the kitchen. What she was feeling was impossible.

She bit her lip. What she was planning on doing smacked of hypocrisy. But it was the only way she could think of to protect Lucy until Brandon and Ted were caught. If the chief approved her idea. She had sent him a text about it the night before. He hadn’t said yes or no. Before he could give her the go ahead, he needed to talk with Lucy’s bishop. If Bishop Hershberger didn’t agree, it would be a waste of time to discuss it.

Eventually, Jack woke up, said a sleepy good morning to her and retreated to the bathroom. In a few minutes, he sauntered into the kitchen, his hair wet from a shower, as she was scooping the cheesy eggs she had scrambled onto two plates. The bacon was ready, too.

“There’s milk and juice in the fridge, or there’s pods for the Keurig there.” She gestured with the spatula to the K-Cup carousel on the counter. He slipped past her and spun the carousel.

“Morning blend, French vanilla, hot chocolate, caramel, deep roast... You sure do like your coffee, Nicole.”

She snickered. “I have three other flavors in the cupboard, but I didn’t have room to put them in it.”

He laughed and plucked a morning-blend pod out and put it in the machine. Soon, the hearty aroma mingled with the scent of bacon in the air. He sat at the table and tucked into his breakfast.

When breakfast was over, he helped her clean up. Before they left for the station and got in his Escape, Jack walked around the SUV, looking under it and in all the crevices.

“Clear.”

It wasn’t until they were traveling that he brought up their conversation from the night before. “So? What’s this brilliant idea you had?”

“Huh. Not so sure it’s brilliant. But I do think it could work.
